READY FOR AFRICAN FASHION WEEK?
Last week, Pearls and Revolution had the pleasure of meeting the dynamic actors behind this year’s African Fashion Week in New York. Hosted by Adirée, the Molton Brown store in SoHo served as the perfect venue for African fashion enthusiasts who were eager for a first look at the designs coming down the runway in July. AFWNY will be held July 14th to 16th showcasing collections from industry favorites such as Korto Momolu and Saint Wobil to up and coming talents like Washington Roberts and Nadir Tati.
Guests were welcomed with excellent wine and gift baskets from Molton Brown’s bath and body skin care line. Models and designers alike worked the room, mingling with guests and parading the select designs on display. The atmosphere was very relaxed but with an expectant almost eager attitude for the challenge and rigor of designing, producing and participating in AFWNY. The excitement and anticipation emanating from the young designers was contagious. We were introduced to several designers eager to share stories about their journey in creating their collections and personal anecdotes about breaking through fashion’s elite close-knit circle.
Fashion’s Godfatherism has allowed a select few as the purveyors of style. What AFWNY offers is a platform for Africa’s talented designers to develop and establish their own cultural currency representing a diverse yet collective African identity.
We enjoyed the preview designs from the AFWNY designers and we look forward to all the presentations in July. Pearls and Revolution will give you a front row seat and backstage pass to all the excitement to come!
