These gorgeous photos from “An Island in the Sun,” are the first images from Black Americana – “a four part photo-essay presenting a commentary on Black American life.” The creative duo behind the series, Brandon Littlejohn and Rod Gailes OBC, are stimulating discussions about the differences in the African-American experience in America. It broadens the narrative of the single story of beauty and national identity that emerged during the civil rights period and depicts a refreshing look at a piece of Black American history.
“The next 3 installments will cover Black patriotism, family and education. The culminating collection of images will then be showcased in a gallery showing and packaged as a photo-book.” – Black Americana
If these images are any indication of what is to come, then I’m very excited to see the finished project.
